A framework for psychedelic experiences

Hey Reader,

If you've ever experienced a moderate to high dose psychedelic trip, you'll probably agree that there are a lot of similarities to very vivid dreams.

Like psychedelic trips, dreams can often unfold in some pretty 'trippy' ways.

They're also known to be highly influenced by your mindset and current mental state (just like the 'set' in psychedelics 'set' and 'setting' guidelines).

Intense emotions are another characteristic common to both.

Lastly, with both dreams and trips, there's often this tendency to completely forget what happened despite the significance and profoundness of the experience.

There have been many times where I've woken up with intense emotions of either joy, fear, gratitude, etc.

When awake, I'd realize that I just had a vivid dream...

But within seconds, all the contents of the dream seemed to be wiped from my memory instantly.

Now, there are all sorts of theories that exist around dreams and how to interpret them.

Unfortunately, when it comes to interpreting psychedelic experiences, there isn't as much research.

But in this email, I want to introduce you to a framework for categorizing psychedelic experiences.

This framework isn't really used to interpret what you see during psychedelic trips, but it's a useful tool to help categorize trips based on the type of experience you have.

The framework was created by Stanislav Grof based on his 4500+ sessions using LSD on his clinical patients.

This was back in the early 60s when psychiatrists around the world were exploring the clinical uses of LSD for treating patients.

So let's start with the first 'type' of experience.

It's called a 'Temporal Expansion of Consciousness'.

Within this type of experience are:

  • Embryonal and fetal experiences
  • Ancestral experiences
  • Collective and racial experiences
  • Phylogenetic (evolutionary) experiences
  • Past-incarnation experiences
  • Precognition, clairvoyance, clairaudience, and 'Time Travels'

If you remember last email...

We looked at a case of a guy that had recollections from being in the womb.

So this would be classified as an 'Embryonal and fetal experience'.

Just looking at the names of the types of experiences, you can already tell that the psychedelic experience can manifest in a wide range of ways (this is only part of the framework too).

But like I said, the 6 types I listed above are only part of the framework.

I'll cover the next part in a future issue and give you some more interesting accounts and how they can be classified and used in our the framework.

That's all for now!

P.S. If you've had an experience that falls into one of the categories, I'd love to hear about.

Shoot me a reply and let me know!

Until next time.

Riaz

Our highest needs as human beings is self-actualization. Becoming the person we know in our hearts we're meant to be. My newsletter is about achieving this. I'm by no means there, but I'm here to share my experiences with you in hopes that they may guide you on your own journey. My emphasis is on alternative methods of personal, mental, and spiritual development such as psychedelics, meditation, breathwork, etc. It's only through trial and experimentation that you'll be able to figure out what works for you!
